I covered the Tagistani dwellings featured in the last post with a first splash of dark brown grout filler. I did some simple sculpting of mud bricks into the grout as usual but also used the grout to give a hint of door handles and hinges on the window shutters. windows as I couldn’t find much evidence of period Palestinian or Persian mud brick buildings having these features – perhaps because of a shortage of wood or because mud brick building didn’t require the weight above an opening to be supported. Using earth to build a house would make, of course, smoothing the surfaces quite simple – and helped along by any rainfall.
