Austrian Line Infantry

This is a list of the Austrian line infantry regiments that fought at Aspern-Essling, the ‘German’ first then the Hungarian. The second and third columns list the number of men and the number of battalions that were recorded as present at the beginning of the Danube Campaign in April at Abensberg. These are listed simply to compare with the later numbers at Aspern- Essling. If no number is given, none is recorded. The fourth and fifth columns list the men and battalions present in May at Aspern-Essling. These numbers are used for the ‘May Figures’ columns. In the first, the number of men in the regiment divided by 50 (1:50) together with the number of figures that I actually plan to use to represent the regiment. In the second column, the number and the size of battalions I intend to use – I have combined some battalions. For convenience, I have added the distinguishing facing colours of the regiments. The figures are organised in multiples of six to match my close-order bases – representing (around) 300 men each. This has necessitated certain liberties. To accommodate representing formations on the tabletop, the smallest battalion must be two bases (12 figures). This means that – whether or not historically accurate – some battalions must fight as combined units. The upshot is that the regiments are organised into either normal (12-figure), large (18-figure) or extra-large (24- figure) battalions – even if small battalions (6-figure) have to be (unhistorically) combined to do so.
